Sony XA3 goes quirky with no chin and huge forehead

first_imgSony has been one of the few companies over the last few years to completely avoid the display notch in its smartphones. Its premium XZ series of flagship smartphones have till date stuck to an 18:9 display aspect ratio. It isn’t difficult to predict that Sony probably did this to avoid the disproportionate aesthetics of the notch. However, of late we have seen renders of Sony’s upcoming flagship device gaining larger, or rather a taller, display. Sony seems to be following its own trend of putting taller displays on more affordable Xperia phones as well.Official renders of a Sony smartphone, discovered by WinFuture, have leaked on the Internet. The device is slated to be called the Xperia XA3 and will sport the new taller display ratio that we have previously seen for the leaked renders of the XZ4. The renders show that the front of the phone will sport a modern narrow-bezel display, but in a quirky fashion. The side bezels are extremely thin as usual. The top bezel, as seen in the renders, is extremely thick. In fact, it’s as thick as smartphones with 16:9 displays with thicker bezels from yesteryears. The fat forehead hosts the earpiece and possibly, the front camera as well as the sensors. The display is similar to the 21:9 “Cinemawide” panel rumoured to make an appearance on the XZ4 as well. Wonder what’ the benefit of such a thick forehead in a smartphone in 2019?A slim chin. The Xperia XA3 renders show an almost non-existent chin at the bottom, sitting flush with the side bezels. In fact, the chin seems to be as perfect as the one on the iPhone XS.advertisement Basically, what Sony has done is reverse the display arrangement the completely. In other Android phones, manufactures tuck in the display connectors and drivers under the bottom bezel, due to which they gain a noticeable chin. In the XA3, Sony has probably housed the display driver on top of the phone. This has resulted in a weird yet interesting solution for Sony to tackle the issue of a notch or a thick chin.Rest of the smartphone seems fairly conventional. The XA3 render shows the usual buttons, speaker and ports arrangement as seen on previous Sony Xperia devices. The rear of the phone sports a horizontally mounted dual camera module. The device will also sport NFC as standard. The renders also show a host of colour variants that Sony could offer on the Xperia XA3 when it’s launched.Do you think Sony’s implementation of avoiding a notch is more practical than the existing convention of notches or slider displays?ALSO READ | New Nokia 9 PureView renders once again reveal notch-less display, five rear camerasALSO READ | Facebook is making it easier for you to see how your contact info is used for targeting adsALSO READ | Is WhatsApp planning to leave India?
