But I think that much of Daniel Jones and his future as an NFL quarterback.” The Giants surprised many when they took a quarterback early, selecting Daniel Jones out of Duke with the No. 6 overall pick. However, New York general manager Dave Gettleman later offered an explanation for the decision. Gettleman believes there were two NFL teams preparing to take Jones and if they had waited until their 17th pick, the quarterback wouldn’t have been on the board anymore. He wouldn’t reveal the teams, but SNY reported the Giants feared the Broncos (10th pick) and the Redskins (15th) would take Jones. Jones is coming off a season in which he completed 60.5 percent of his passes and threw for 22 touchdowns, along with nine interceptions. He now appears in line to replace longtime New York starter Eli Manning at some point over the next few seasons.Manning was inconsistent in 2018 as the Giants missed the playoffs for a second straight year. He completed 66 percent of his passes and threw for 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 16 games as New York finished with a 5-11 record.last_img
